Malawi is a very small country in Central Africa, sharing borders with Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique. Formally a British colony, its official language is English, though it has numerous ethnic languages pertaining to various tribes. A third of the country is all water, this is the Fresh water Lake Malawi, which a Scottish
missionary and explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, discovered and named Lake Nyasa, which in the Yao language means 'lake'. The Yaos live on the shores of southern Lake Malawi. The colonial British called the country Nyasaland. Blantyre, Malawi's biggest and commercial city, grew from Dr. David Livingstone's Blantyre mission, which he established in this area and named it after his Scottish home village.
